Criteria of Media Monitoring

Media monitoring programme is designed to collect substantial evidence on the performance of mainstream media (print/TV) and to report on the performance of the mainstream media industries on the protection and promotion of humanistic values and democratic practices.
Fiji Media Watch monitors both the news stories and the advertisements for these humanistic values. The criteria also aligns with the Fiji 2010 Media Decrees’ Code of Ethics on Reporting and Advertising and Media Freedom, Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Information.
FMW monitored news reports in The Fiji Times and the Fiji Sun. Monitoring activity included the collection of data (news) from the first three (3) pages of the dailies. PAges from five (5) days of the week are collected (Monday-Friday) and the monitoring team used a grid and a set of criterion to monitor the news.
The Eight (8) Social Justice Issues in News Stories are:
  1. Human Rights – Education and Media Freedom
  2. Climate change and sea level rise
  3. Environmental degradation, natural disasters, nuclear issues and unsustainable exploitation such as fisheries and logging
  4. a) Reinforcing gender stereotypes
      b) Challenging gender stereotypes
  5. National Politics Government (electoral process, domestic politics, speeches, political news)
  6. International Political news involving Fiji’s Government
  7. Youth
  8. Health
